In the United States, investors are gearing up for a busy week with a focus on retail sales data and speeches from several Federal Reserve policymakers. The second week of the Q1 earnings season will also see reports from major financial institutions including Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, American Express, Blackstone, and Charles Schwab. Additionally, prominent firms such as UnitedHealth, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Netflix, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, ASML Holding, Abbott, ProLogis, Intuitive Surgical, and Elevance Health are scheduled to release their earnings.
March's retail sales are projected to show a growth of 0.3%, following a 0.6% increase in February. The housing market will also come under scrutiny with updates on building permits, housing starts, existing home sales, and the NAHB Housing Market Index. Other key US economic indicators to watch include industrial production, business inventories, overall capital flows, the NY Empire State Manufacturing Index, and the Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index.
In Canada, attention will be on March's inflation data and housing starts.
Europe will have a lighter week in terms of economic data, but the focus will remain on Germany’s ZEW economic sentiment and producer prices. The Euro Area will release final inflation figures, industrial production, and trade balance data. Italy will also provide final inflation figures and trade balance updates. In the UK, updates on the unemployment rate, wage growth, inflation rate, and retail sales will be closely watched, following recent positive economic indicators from monthly GDP figures.
In Asia, China is set to release its GDP figures, anticipated to confirm a growth rate of 5% as targeted by Beijing. Additional data from China will include March's industrial production, retail sales, unemployment rate, house prices, and first-quarter credit figures. In Japan, the focus will be on March’s trade balance and inflation rate, as well as the Reuters Tankan index for April, which will help gauge the impact of the weakening yen.
