Wall Street’s Triple Test: Rates, Growth and AI

The Fed’s rate decision, US GDP and inflation data, and Big Tech earnings put economic growth and AI investment returns to the test.

A packed US economic calendar puts monetary policy, growth and corporate earnings under the spotlight this week. The Federal Reserve’s rate decision, third-quarter GDP and PCE inflation figures could offer crucial clues about the direction of interest rates through year-end, particularly as economic strength continues to complicate the inflation outlook.

Too Much Growth for a Rate Cut?

The US economy is projected to have expanded at an annualized 3.2% in the third quarter, supported partly by heavy investment in AI, data centers and technology infrastructure.

Yet signs of rising core PCE inflation present a challenge for the Fed. Strong growth alongside persistent price pressures could limit the central bank’s room to cut rates, keeping monetary policy restrictive for longer.

Personal income, consumer spending, consumer confidence and employment cost figures will provide further insight into household demand and wage pressures, two important factors in the Fed’s policy calculations.

Wall Street Wants Returns on the AI Boom

Earnings from Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft will bring the financial returns on AI investments into question. As technology companies invest billions into their infrastructure, revenue growth and profitability will determine the sustainability of this spending cycle.
